Pensacola Hauntings, Don't be Afraid

Pensacola Hauntings are discussed here. You decide if the stories are true. Do you believe in ghosts? Do you like to hear ghostly tales? Well, read along and picture in your mind's eye the events described here.

Pensacola Lighthouse may be haunted.

First on the Pensacola Hauntings list is The Pensacola Lighthouse located on the Naval Air Station. Completed in 1858, the 171 foot high tower is the oldest on the Gulf Coast. It survived cannon strikes in the Civil War and being occupied by Confederate troops whom the Union soldiers thought were using it for a lookout post.

It is said that some of the century's worth of keepers still roam the keeper's quarters, tower, and the surrounding grounds. Sightings and other strange things happening all around the compound date back to the 1930s. One man, Emmitt Hatton, who lived with his parents in the keeper's quarters from 1931 to 1953 has some tales to tell. Pensacola hauntings, WOW!!!

At times when he would go up to tend the lens, he could hear human breathing although by himself. Once when he was 10, Hatten and his mother heard creaking on the stair case. His mother sent him to see who was there, he even yelled up the stairs. He got no answer but the footsteps continued. Upon hearing the front door open and close, he ran to the second floor balcony, looked down but saw no one. However, he did see the front gate open and close seemingly by itself.

There is the story of a former keeper being murdered by his wife in the keeper's quarters. The blood stains on the floor are still visible. It is said her punishment was a lifetime of tending to keeper's duties in place of her husband. The story has it she was haunted by her murdered husband. She heard creepy laughter in empty rooms, saw shadows in the windows of the locked tower, constant smell of pipe tobacco, and sudden blasts of cold air.

In 1994, a sightseer took his son and daughter for a tour. During the wait to climb the stairs, the man's son kept saying he wanted to see the ghost. His father insisted the ghost only moves things, you can't see it. The boy persisted voiceing his wants. As they climbed the stairs the boy stopped his talking and was quiet. They enjoyed the view and started down. The boy was leading in view of his father when he asked that his sister stop whispering in his ear. When he was told it wasn't his sister he just gave a bizarre look. Upon reaching the bottom the boy realized it wasn't his sister. He told his father he heard his name whispered.

There have been reports of a man standing in the window, a woman on the catwalk, and doors and gates opening and closing by themselves. Ghost hunting groups have reported smelling freshly lit tobacco with no smokers around. The Pensacola lighthouse is open for tours from June - October. The facility remains an active aid to navigation.

Let's continue with Pensacola Hauntings.

Fort Barrancas on Pensacole Naval Air Station is next on the list. At times there have been seen large black cloud like apparitions that resembled a soldier looking out of a rifle port. These are seen often by the attendants.

The Gray House on Alcaniz Street is thought to be haunted by the ghost of an old sea captain who lived there in the 1700s. When the house isn't occupied there has appeared the shadow of a man looking in the window. Lit stoves have been mysteriously turned off. A painter's paint was moved from inside the house to the outside overnight. Residents nearby say they see apparitions inside the house. Personally I think Pensacola Hauntings are exciting.

Coon Hill Cemetary in Chumuckla, Fl. has had a long history of hauntings. I haven't been there (yet) but will visit soon and get some pics. They say if you want to visit bring a friend, especially at night. From what I understand, if you walk along the perimeter wall, about the halfway mark, you will be shoved off by unseen hands. At night, they say, you can see orbs of light over the graves. WOW!! You can join the Annual Historic Haunted House Walking Tours - October 20-21 & 27-28. Call 850-433-1559 for more information or reservations. You decide if the Pensacola Hauntings are real.
