The Pensacola News Journal is Your News Connection in Pensacola.

Here is a brief history of the Pensacola News Journal. The Pensacola Daily News was founded in 1889 by a group of Pensacola businessmen. Its initial circulation began March 5, 1889 with 2500 copies. However, in March 1897, a Pensacolian named founded a newsweekly named the Pensacola Journal, which became a daily a year later. These two dailies competed so strongly they almost drove each other to bankruptcy. In1922, with the Journal in bad financial trouble, a New Yorker John Holliday Perry purchased it along with two others, one in Jachsonville and the other in Panama City. Two years later the Journal and the Daily News merged under Perry’s ownership.

For the next 60 years pensacolians would receive the Pensacola Journal mornings, The Pensacola News evenings, and the Pensacola News Journal on Sunday. The paper became one of the most popular and successful newspapers in the southeast.

Perry’s son, John Holliday Perry, Jr. Took over the business from his father in 1955 expanding the business to own 28 papers throughout Florida. On July 1, 1969, Perry, Jr. announced the two papers to Gannett Co. For 15.5 million dollars.

In 1997 and 1998 the paper gained national notoriety with a series of investigative articles concerning the Brownville Revival at the Brownville Assembly of God. The series won many awards but was criticized by evangelicals across the country.

As of 2004, the News Journal had a daily circulation of 63,351 and a Sunday circulation of 80,954. On June 2, 2009 the production departments were moved to Mobile, Al. But the papers are still being delivered as before. I haven’t noticed any service interuption. There is also the Weekender that tells of upcoming weekend events and how to enjoy them. When in the area you can plan your weekends with the help of this publication. If you wish to view their website, follow this link: PNJ
