Winter Fishing in Pensacola

It's January 3, 2010 and winter is here for sure. The low last night was around 25 degrees. We have had a lot of
rain fall due to the passing cold fronts. The rivers are up which has a negative effect for fishermen. In the past
when the rains held off, I would go up Escambia river from the Swamphouse Marina to the hot water discharge that
came from Gulf Power. The warm water generally held some biting fish of different species. As for the saltwater
fish, they will perk up in the cold water around the various structures in the bays. If you decide to go out in
the bay fishing in a smaller boat, be mindful that it is winter and the winds will blow for the most part. This
can create some rough water even in the bay, aside from the gulf. In the bay you should be able to make catches on
cut bait or artificials along the bottom. If you want to fish the gulf, use a larger boat, say 20 feet with a couple
feet of freeboard. Fish the bottom structure where you can find it. The winds are mostly from the north to northwest
which means that it will be blowing away from shore. The ride out will be much smoother than the ride back in. As
the day wears on this will be more pronounced. Pensacola Pass has fairly deep water due to dredging for ship
traffic. Try some cut bait on the bottom here, but remember to keep an eye open for ship traffic since this is the
opening to the gulf. Good luck and safe boating.

One of the best events occurring every Tuesday from May to September, is the Bands on the Beach show at the Gulfside Pavilion. Tomorrow, Tuesday August 25th, Pensacola Beachs own Civilized Natives will be playing from 7:00 - 9:00pm featuring original music and covering a wide range of artists music such as Eric Clapton, Celine, Dion, and Weezer.
New Fishing Rules

New rules for shore fishing start, Aug. 1st
Copied from Google Alerts
Starting next month, Florida residents fishing from beaches or bridges will have to buy a fishing license before dropping a line.

New Shore Fishing Rules...!
Since 1989, Florida residents have been exempt from license requirements if they were fishing from shore, or structures attached to shore, such as docks, piers or bridges. But a law signed by Gov. Charlie Crist last month approved a new license that will be required for shoreline anglers starting Aug. 1. The new license, which will go on sale July 15 and is good for one year, will cost $7.50 plus a $1.50 administrative fee. Residents also have the option of buying a regular saltwater fishing license, which costs $17 and covers shoreline fishing as well as fishing from boats. Some residents still will be exempt from the shoreline license requirement, including senior citizens, children younger than 16 and people drawing food stamps, Barreto said. Out-of-state residents 16 and older always have needed a license.

I found this post from the Selvidge Family on Google Alert/Pensacola

We had fun visiting Eric's parents and his sister. They live in Pensacola, Fl. They are only 15 min from the best beach ever. I liked it more then Hawaii. On the bay side we saw fish at our feet and little crabs and the wavey side was beautiful and we found a lot of shells. We went to the zoo with the twins and the girls fed a giraffe a cracker for the first time. Carli loved the animals it was her first zoo trip.I left on Friday to VA for my friend Karla's wedding and Eric had to fly home with the girls by himself.Poor Eric-there were storms and his flight was delayed but they put them in first class on the 2nd flight. They got to see my sister at the Houston, TX airport though.

I am very glad that your family enjoyed your vacation around Pensacola. I am a life long Pensacolian and proud of it. So to say it was better than Hawaii, makes me beam with pride!

If you are wondering how I found you, I have google setup to send me anything posted with Pensacola in the text.
